چکیده

Abstract We present new large field-of-view (∼1°×1°) Ca-CN photometry of the prototypical metal-rich globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104). Our results are following. (1) The populational number ratios red giant branch (RGB) and horizontal (RHB) in excellent agreement: n (CN-w): (CN-s) = 30:70 (±1–2), where CN-w CN-s stand for CN-weak CN-strong populations, respectively. Both RGB RHB populations more centrally concentrated than those are. (2) photometric metallicities individual stars each population can be well described by bimodal distributions with two metallicity peaks, [Fe/H] ∼−0.72 −0.92 dex, metal-poor components occupy ∼13% total stars. significantly showing a similar result that we found M3. (3) bump V magnitudes indicate there is no difference helium abundance between while enhancement Δ Y ∼0.02–0.03 required populations. (4) morphology Tuc appears to support our idea distribution cluster. suggest could another example merger remnants clusters, M3 M22.

An aluminium tool for multiple stellar generations in the globular clusters 47 Tucanae and M 4⋆⋆⋆

We present aluminium abundances for a sample of about 100 red giant stars in each of the Galactic globular clusters 47 Tuc (NGC 104) and M 4 (NGC 6121). We have derived homogeneous abundances from intermediate-resolution FLAMES/GIRAFFE spectra. Aluminium abundances are from the strong doublet Al i 8772-8773 Å, as in previous works done for giants in NGC 6752 and NGC 1851, and nitrogen abundance...

Mixed Populations in Globular Clusters : Et Tu , 47 Tuc ? 1

We exploit the large number of archival HST images of 47 Tuc to examine its subgiant branch (SGB) and main sequence (MS) for signs of multiple populations. In the cluster core, we find that the cluster's SGB exhibits a clear spread in luminosity, with at least two distinct components: a brighter one with a spread that is real but not bimodal, and a second one about 0.05 mag fainter, containing ...

Multiple stellar populations in Globular Clusters: collection of information from the Horizontal Branch

The majority of the inhomogeneities in the chemical composition of Globular Cluster (GC) stars appear due to primordial enrichment by hot-CNO cycled material processed in stars belonging to a first stellar generation. Either massive AGB envelopes subject to hot bottom burning, or the envelopes of massive fastly rotating stars could be the progenitors. In both cases, the stars showing chemical a...

Hot Stellar Populations in Globular Clusters: a Photometrist’s View

We briefly review the recent results on hot horizontal-branch stars in globular clusters. Since the first Ivanfest, in 1992, there have been a number of new observational lines of evidence which have allowed significant progress in our understanding of blue-tail stars, though new, even more intriguing questions arise. Despite this progress, we still do not know the answer to the main question: ...
